It is also known as the "Daasiyattam" since it wasperfomed by Devadasis in the temples of Tamil Nadu. The word Bharatanatyam is derived from three basic concepts Bhava, Raga and Thaala. According to the popular etymology, "BHAvam" means expression, "RAgam" means music, "THAlam" means rhytham and "NATYAM" means dance. One of the possible origins of the name is from "Bharata Muni" who wrote the NatyaShastra.
